Welcome to the training on Childhood and Adolescent Depression provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

Credit hours: 1.75 CE

Goal

The goal of this module is to equip Texas Health Steps providers and others to identify and manage childhood and adolescent depression in a primary care setting, make appropriate referrals when needed, and provide ongoing care and coordination.

Target Audience

Texas Health Steps providers and other interested health-care professionals.

Specific Learning Objectives

After completing the activities of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between two signs or symptoms of depression in children and adolescents.
  2. Specify possible consequences of undetected and untreated childhood and adolescent depression.
  3. Analyze cultural variables that affect presentation of and treatment for childhood and adolescent depression.
  4. Evaluate risk factors for depression in children and adolescents.
  5. Determine one recommendation in clinical practice guidelines for the assessment of depression.
  6. Employ a specific screening tool to assess childhood and adolescent depression.
  7. Formulate one recommendation in clinical practice guidelines for the treatment and management of depression.
  8. Specify one criterion indicating a patient should be referred to a psychiatrist for assessment or treatment of depression.
