Welcome to the training on Introduction to Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

Goal

The goal of this course is to introduce Texas Health Steps providers and others to best practices in SBIRT and provide them with resources for obtaining training and instituting routine screening and early intervention for adolescent patients with substance use disorders or risk for developing such disorders.

Target Audience

Texas Health Steps providers and other interested health-care professionals.

Specific Learning Objectives

After completing the activities of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Determine one reason why Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is recommended for use with adolescents.
  2. Specify two tools providers may use to screen young people for substance use.
  3. Evaluate three resources that help providers overcome their reluctance to address substance use with adolescents.
