Welcome to training on hearing and vision screening provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Goal

The goal of this module is to introduce Texas Health Steps (THSteps) providers and others to best practices for early and periodic screening for hearing and vision impairments in children and adolescents.

Target Audience

Texas Health Steps providers and other interested health-care professionals.

Specific Learning Objectives

After completing the activities of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify four circumstances that can result in infants needing a hearing screening.
  2. Indicate two requirements for providing hearing screening using an audiometric screening device.
  3. Select two hearing screening components for children younger than 4 years of age.
  4. Define two hearing screening components for children ages 4 and older.
  5. Identify one way to perform subjective hearing screening in the context of an office visit.
  6. Identify how the THSteps Medical Checkup periodicity schedule or other pediatric checkup schedules correlate with the schedule for hearing screenings in educational and childcare settings.
  7. Indicate when school-based testing can be substituted for required or recommended office-based audiometric testing during a checkup.
  8. Identify two types of hearing services provided by Medicaid for children birth through 20 years of age.
  9. Identify two components of a newborn vision screening examination.
  10. Indicate two techniques for performing vision screening for children birth through 2 years of age.
  11. Identify two techniques for performing vision screening for children 3 through 4 years of age.
  12. Identify two techniques for performing vision screening for children ages 5 and older.
  13. Define the difference between the periodicity schedule for THSteps vision screening and the schedule for required school-based vision screening.
  14. Select two age and developmentally appropriate tools approved for use in screening children's vision.
  15. Define the coverage policy for eyeglasses and other vision-assistance equipment for a statewide provider, such as Texas Medicaid, including the policy for replacing children's eyeglasses.

Certificates

This module includes a pre- and post-test. Both tests need to be completed for you to receive a certificate of completion, and you must score a 75% on the post-test to pass. After you complete the post-test, you will be asked to evaluate your training experience, and you will be provided with information about securing continuing education credit. All faculty, planners, speakers and authors of Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Continuing Education Service sponsored activities are expected to disclose to the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Continuing Education Service any relevant financial, relationships with any commercial or personal interest that produces health care goods or services concerned with the content of an educational presentation. Faculty, planners, speakers and authors must also disclose where there are any other potentially biasing relationships of a professional or personal nature.

Conflict of Interest – Circumstances create a conflict of interest when an individual has an opportunity to affect Continuing Education content about products or services of a commercial interest with which she/he has a financial relationship or where there are any other potentially biasing relationships of a professional or personal nature.

Commercial Interest – Any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients.

Financial Relationships – Those relationships in which the individual benefits by receiving a salary, royalty, intellectual property rights, consulting fee, honoraria, ownership interest (e.g., stocks, stock options or other ownership interest, excluding diversified mutual funds), or other financial benefit. Financial benefits are usually associated with roles such as employment, management position, independent contractor (including contracted research), consulting, teaching, membership on advisory committees or review panels, board membership, and other activities for which remuneration is received or expected. Relevant financial relationships would include those within the past 12 months of the person involved in the activity and a spouse or partner. Relevant financial relationships of your spouse or partner are those of which you are aware at the time of this disclosure.
