Welcome to the training on Promoting Oral Health through Caries Risk Assessment and Dental Anticipatory Guidance provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

Goal

The goal of this module is to equip Texas Health Steps dentists and other dental care professionals to implement nationally recognized dental quality measures such as individualized caries risk assessment and age-appropriate anticipatory guidance to improve oral health for patients 3 through 20 years.

Target Audience

Texas Health Steps providers and other interested health-care professionals.

Specific Learning Objectives

After completing the activities of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Examine the need to increase the availability of preventive oral health care services for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
  2. Specify how Texas Health Steps promotes the dental home concept.
  3. Determine the frequency of oral health evaluations and preventive services recommended for children and adolescents enrolled in Texas Health Steps.
  4. Given a case study, determine the current level of caries risk for a patient.
  5. Specify age-appropriate anticipatory guidance that should be given during a dental exam to promote oral health.
  6. Determine when mandatory prior authorization is required for a dental service.
