The goal of this module is to equip Texas Health Steps providers and other interested health-care professionals to assess nutritional and growth status of children and adolescents and provide age-appropriate dietary counseling as part of routine medical care.

Specific Learning Objectives

After completing the activities of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Specify the factors that influence healthy dietary habits.
  2. Assess patients’ growth, weight, and nutritional status as required by the Texas Health Steps Periodicity Schedule, using approved tools.
  3. Apply age-appropriate guidance to promote nutritional health and encourage healthy eating habits in infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence.
  4. Evaluate risk factors for special dietary issues such as overweight and obesity and eating disorders.
