Motivational Interviewing

Welcome to the training on Motivational Interviewing provided by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

The goal of this module is to equip Texas Health Steps providers and others to begin employing motivational interviewing techniques as part of routine clinical practice to support children, adolescents and families in making positive health changes and maintaining self-care for chronic conditions.

Texas Health Steps providers and other interested health-care professionals.

Specific Learning Objectives

After completing the activities of this module, you will be able to:

1. Assess how motivational interviewing (MI) differs from traditional provider-patient communication and why it can effectively motivate positive behavior changes.

2. Integrate MI best practices into routine clinical encounters to promote healthy habits and self-care.
