Texas Health Steps: Overview

Welcome to the training on Texas Health Steps: Overview provided by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Credit hours: 1.50 CE


The goal of this module is to equip Texas Health Steps providers and others who care for children and adolescents enrolled in Texas Medicaid to recognize the importance of the program, perform all components of a preventive medical checkup, make appropriate referrals, identify which services and equipment require prior authorization, and understand requirements for being a Texas Health Steps provider.

Target Audience

Texas Health Steps providers and other interested health-care professionals.

Specific Learning Objectives

After completing the activities of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Summarize the scope of preventive health services encompassed by Texas Health Steps.  
  2. Complete and document all required components of Texas Health Steps preventive medical checkups. 
  3. Specify the process that must be used to make referrals for specialty or subspecialty care or to obtain services and equipment that require prior authorization.
