Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders:
Promoting Early Identification and Support for Children

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) affect up to 5 percent of children in the U.S., and nearly 14 percent of pregnancies may be exposed to alcohol (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2023). The effects of fetal alcohol exposure are lifelong, but FASD is preventable. By teaching prevention and providing early intervention and support, pediatric health-care providers can improve the lives of children and families.
